Hello August! So here we go into another month and looking forward to more interesting reads. I've struck lucky this  year with all the books I've read ~ I've enjoyed them all. So many have been debut novels too and that makes it all the more exciting.

Fallible Justice by Laura Laaks

 

 

I should say at the start that I was sent an advanced copy of Fallible Justice  to read and review. The book is not available until  publication date on the 8th November 2018, published by Louise Walters Books. This is the first in the paranormal crime series, Wilde Investigations. I have to say this would not normally be a genre that I would usually read, and I'm so glad to have the opportunity to do so.

The novel is set in 'Old London' where paranormal races co-exist with humans. The protagonist is Yannia who was raised by the Wild Folk, and can summon the powers of animals to her senses to aid her investigative powers. She is an outsider in Old London. Yannina is a private investigator who has been given the task of  proving a man is innocent of a crime ~ a murder he says he did not commit. He has been sentenced to death by the Heralds and Yannia has just five days to prove his innocence, complicated by the fact that the Heralds are never wrong in their decision making. Yannina is assisted by an apprentice, Karrion, a Bird Shamen. Between them, and their respective powers, and using a friend in the (human) police force, they set out against the clock to find the truth, overcoming seemingly impossible obstacles along the way.

This is an extraordinary mystery tale, full of twists and turns. Just as you think you know what's happening another spanner is thrown in the works to confuse the reader (in a good way). Not once did I have to suspend disbelief as the story unfolded and the use of paranormal powers to decipher clues. It all seemed perfectly normal. Haven't we all at some point wished we can use magic to make a situation better, or  be the ear to the wall? The characters are beautifully drawn, especially liked Yannia, the protagonist, and the enigmatic Lady Bergamon ~ I want to be her!

 

Did I work out who did what? I'm not telling! Neat twist at the end mind. Looking forward to reading more of Laura Laaks work  in the Wilde Investigation series.
