June / July Read and Reviews

Oh my word! Where has the time gone? We're galloping into Summer and I'm hanging onto its coat~tails for dear life. I have some catching up to do!

I'm reading Thrillers and Mysteries at the moment. Ok, so what have I read in July? I have to say, I've enjoyed them all!

My Husband's Wife by Jane Corry

Such a good read, full of suspense and twists and turns. As the strap line says, First comes love, then comes marriage and then comes murder. A real page turner that I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened, and who, how and why? Cleverly told in two halves: setting out the characters in the past in part one, to make sense of the characters in the present in part two.

It has devious women, families, and a tortured soul of a writer ~ what more could you want? Oh, a murder perhaps! But who did it and how did it happen?

I'm always interested in how childhood and life experience's frame the adult perspective. My Husband's Wife is full of family secret and lies (themes that I love and intrigue me). The story is told through the eyes of Lily, who becomes a lawyer, and when she steps over the line and befriends a murderer in prison, who claims he's innocent ~of course ~ I was shouting at the pages, "Don't do it Lily! He also had a way of keeping her safe and tipping her off about things about to happen, or clues to problems she's trying to solve, such was the 'influence' he had over people. I won't give any spoilers away.

A good read!

The Missing Girl by Jenny Quintana

I loved this book and read in two sittings! As the blurb says, it's a captivating mystery.

It has been thirty years since Anna's sister, Gabriella, disappeared. When Anna's mother dies she is forced to return home and confront her past. This is a Mystery full of twists and turns as Anna tries to unravel the secrets and lies from her past and face her demons. It's a 'who dunnit,' but who did do it? Who is the weird friend from school who was relentlessly bullied by her peers? What does she know about Gabriella if only Anna would listen? When she does listen, what a shock for her.

Play the guessing game as you read  the book for yourself ~ you'll enjoy it I'm sure like I did.

A stranger in the House by Shari Lapena.

Why would you run scared from a happy home?

Karen wakes up in hospital after crashing her car, and seems to be acting out of character. She has lost her memory and has no recollection of what happened and why? A murder has been committed  near to where Karen's accident happened. Is there a connection between the two events? Why was Karen in the bad part of town? The police don't believe Karen, and nor does her husband, Tom. Her best friend Bridgid, who lives across the road from Karen and Tom,and watches all that unfolds from her living room window, doesn't believe Karen either.

Karen, Tom and Bridgid all have something to hide from each other as well as the Police. Brigid is a creepy character, and reminded me of Karen Hamilton's, 'The Perfect Girlfriend.'

This novel pulls you in from the get go and doesn't release until the last page. So many twists and turns, right down to the last paragraph.

Well worth a read.
